When I started to read Vikram Seth's monster novel, 'A Suitable Boy', I found it hard going: had Seth really written 1400 pages about the attempts of a young woman to find a husband? But the story inside this framing ultimately expanded into an astonishingly broad, subtle, superbly written and cunningly plotted epic. This television adaptation can't quite bring the Seth's full vision to life, and feels much more like I first feared the book would be: an essentially simple story about finding the right partner. We do still see a lot of India; but at times it feels that it's merely providing background colour, while the characters are simplified and presented straight up as the people you gradually come to know over the book's many chapters. It's always hard judging a new version of something you already love fairly, but I couldn't engage with this series. Read the original instead: it's a literary masterpiece. 

This project was so riddled with problems it's difficult to know where to start

the language was so stilted and formal and yet shallow and absurd. This use of language throughout just underpinned the vapid and ridiculous characters, when 92% of marriages are arranged in India and with this drama set after partition and the brutal murder of millions of Muslims and Hindus the story is just incredulous.

It seems nothing more than an Indian Jane Austen with the getting of husbands, and then with the over-layered art and culture it turned into an Indian Brideshead Revisited.

The strange dramatic event in episode 5 was melodramatic in the extreme and it could have all been avoided with a little more communication. I must say this seemed entirely contrived.

The cast was strong and they were fully committed to the project particularly Isaan Khatter as Maan and Mahira Kakkar as the mother, who were entirely convincing.

Andrew Davies did some brilliant work here to glean a working script from this gargantuan novel, but the source material was just not up to it, the lightness and superficiality of the writing in the book just led to a mannered and artificial TV series.

Overall I enjoyed its light tough but the Indian Raj grated, not the BBC's finest hour 5/10
